Description:
1180 Henry II Short Cross Penny issued by Golcelm of Winchester. Henry II succeeded Stephen in 1154 and the Anarchy of his predecessor's period had allowed the coinage to deteriorate. Henry II had attempted to deal with the issue in 1158 by introducing his Cross and Crosslets penny also known as the 'Tealby' penny. However the workmanship of that issue was equally insufficient and thus in 1180 the much better executed Short Cross penny was introduced.
