LawrenceChard collection
The highest grade of 1838 sovereign we have yet owned. They have become quite scarce even in lower grades. The Smithsonian Institution was founded with 104,960 of these, although all but 2 were melted down and reminted into $10 gold eagles. The Smithsonian retains the remaining pair. We grade this coin as EF (XF), but many would call it Unc or AU.
