Description:
Medal awarded by Congress to George Croghan for his defense of Fort Stephenson, Ohio during the War of 1812. This is a US Mint official re-strike of the gold medal awared to Croghan. It is from the late 1800's created for collectors. It is a pure copper medal with a light reddish bronzing coating applied. This is not to be confused with the true yellow bronze medals created by the mint in the 20th century and still for sale to the public into the 1950's and later. This is an outstanding example obtained at a Stacks Americana auction. All 19th century restrikes of US Mint medals are collectors items and most sell for several hundred to several thousand dollars.
