Description:
77Ir Medal commemorating Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee. M.B.T.D on bust indicates Birmingham mint, H under bow for Ralph Heaton, probably made by Spink. The ebay seller said it is Iridium, but the claim is suspect because Iridium is extremely hard, so a good die strike would be nearly impossible using 1890s technology. Iridium is also one of the most dense elements at 22 g/cc, and this medal's density is about 5.7 g/cc, so it is probably made of pewter or some white metal alloy of aluminum, copper, tin, antimony and lead. M. Jacobi is said to have made medals of 20% iridium about 1860. Rwanda has made a pure iridium coin in 2013 as part of their "Noble 5" proof set. (Not listed in J&M)
