Description:
Isle Of Man, Halfpenny, 1733, AE, 24.1 mm. Often called a token in error, this coin was issued under the Lordship of James Stanley, 10th Earl Of Derby. The obv. depicts the Stanley crest, the Eagle and Child, the origin of which is the 14th-century legend of Sir Thomas Lathom arranging for his illegitimate son to be left near an eagle's aerie, to be 'found' when walking with his wife, and adopted. In 1406, John Stanley inherited the Lathom estates through marriage, adopting a modified crest.
