Wekenda Mills, George Steuart & Co., Ceylon; Dated 1843, Issued in 1881, Valued at 19 Cents, Brass Token. Obverse: Two native women at work with legend: "WEKANDE MILLS" with the same in both Sinhalese and Tamil (although incorrect). Reverse: Legend with date in centre: "GEORGE STEUART & Co. *CEYLON*, Milled edge. This was in fact issued in 1881 after the older type tokens had been withdrawn. At this time the mills employed around 1,500 staff. It was designed by the manager of the mills, Charles Hendry.
