Description:
Sir Thomas Brock's obverse introduced in 1893 showed the veiled crowned bust of Victoria wearing the ribbon and star of the Garter. The Queens titles were expanded to include IND:IMP referring to the title Empress of India conferred in 1876. It seems considerable ingenuity was required to fit the lengthy inscription around the Queen's not inconsiderable bosom. This type of obverse used only the St George reverse. Another branch of Royal Mint was established in Perth, Australia and started the production of sovereigns in 1899. During this time the policy of 'continuous recoinage' was instituted, meaning that worn and damaged coins were automatically withdrawn and used to make new coins. Hence the higher mintages than previous times. Coin Type:Australia Minted , 1 Sovereign 1901 Weight : 7.9881g.Fineness:0.916,Diameter :22.05 mm Edge Lettering : reeded Obverse : Older veiled Head of Victoria , left .Title VICTORIA DEI GRA BRITT REGINA FID DEF IND IMP . Reverse : Features the mythical Saint George on horseback slaying the Dragon , designed by the brilliant Italian engraver Benedetto Pistrucci . The date , mintmark M and the initials BP (Benedetto PISTRUCCI 1783-1855)appear underneath the horse.
