| Fiftieth Anniversary of Hirohito. The coin shown is to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the reign of Emperor Hirohito. It may seem odd that it is marked 51 to show it was issued in the 51st year of his reign, but this reflects the fact that regnal numbering starts at year 1 rather than 0. It is struck in cupro-nickel. The obverse design is a chrysanthemum flower. The design on the reverse is that of the Imperial Palace as seen by visitors from Koyo Gaien, a large plaza.
