30% offset brockage of a machine trial piece for an Afghanistan 5-Rupees, undated, bronze, 38.7 mm.

Sir Thomas Salter Pyne (1860-1921) was chief engineer to the government of Afghanistan. Normally, this die was mated with one showing the Emir of Afghanistan from 1880-1901, Abdul Rahman. Pyne left Afghanistan in the summer of 1900, after a cholera epidemic broke out at Jalalabad and Kabul in June and continued to the beginning of August. This piece would have been struck circa 1890s.
