LawrenceChard collection
Two different reverses of pattern gold quarter sovereigns or five shillings, from the Royal Mint Museum's collection. The denomination was never issued (until now), as the size was considered to be unmanageably small. This is probably correct as Victorian half sovereigns were known to wear out quickly, and most halves from this period are found in worn condition. Underweight gold coins would have been unnaceptable in a non-fiat money environment.
