1985 saw the introduction of the Third (Maklouf) portrait on British coins. On gold sovereigns, it only occurs on proof versions, as no uncirculated 'bullion' versions were issued between 1983 and 1999 inclusive, the Maklouf portrait was used from 1985 to 1997 inclusive.
